Draft Stoppers and Door Sweeps
5. Simple Solutions, Big Impact
Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective. Draft stoppers and door sweeps are designed to block drafts from sneaking in under doors and windows. They’re easy to install and can make a noticeable difference in comfort, especially in areas with high traffic.
Draft stoppers are weighted tubes or pillows that sit at the base of a door, blocking drafts from entering. They come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, so you can find one that matches your dcor. You can even make your own draft stopper using fabric scraps and rice or beans for filling! Its a great project to do with kids!
Door sweeps are attached to the bottom of a door and brush against the floor, creating a seal that prevents drafts. They’re available in various materials, including rubber, silicone, and felt. Choose a door sweep that’s appropriate for the type of flooring you have. For instance, a rubber door sweep is a good choice for tile or hardwood floors, while a felt door sweep is better suited for carpet.
For windows, consider using window film or plastic sheeting to create an extra layer of insulation. Window film is a thin, transparent film that’s applied to the glass, reducing heat loss and glare. Plastic sheeting can be taped to the window frame, creating an airtight seal that prevents drafts. These are great, inexpensive temporary solutions for the winter months.
